What did you learn during UK’s bball coach search?

It may seem this way, but it’s not a troll thread
1. In this day age of NIL, UK is not the bluest of blue bloods they claim to be anymore. It’s a new era, and coaches realize they can get whoever the frick they want where they are at this current moment and therefore don’t need to go to UK to have success. The era of prestigious blue bloods is over. The prestige of UK is not disputed, but apparently other coaches don’t give a frick now
2. I thought our resident UK posters were worth a damn. I have never doubted them nor had an issue. But wow they exposed their asses in their arrogance. SadcatMike, BigBlueTitties, BluegrassBelle, UKfanwhateverthefrick etc were absolutely convinced they’d get Oats, Hurley, Donovan, or Drew. I always trusted them before. But it revealed they don’t know anything and therefore all of them are now on the bottom tier of posters

Never trust any UK person posting inside info on here
Flipping a coin is more accurate than their info
UA's balls dropped. Then UK dropped the ball

Based on what I read most of my constituents post, they said on here the same stuff we were being told in the media, on the radio, and on other message boards. None of us are insiders. Here is my understanding of what went down:
AD Barnhart put out feelers to Oats, Drew, Hurley and Donovan. Greg Byrne at Bama refused to renegotiate Nates buyout, so he became kind of a non starter. He also has the stuff with his wife going on. If we'd gotten further down the list then maybe we revisit that. Never came to that.
Drew and Hurley both got the phone call with the expectation Drew was more likely to take it. By all accounts he WAS interested. But as you know by now, his family was flown up here and they just weren't feeling it. Apparently being flown around on a private jet freaked them out a bit. Not used to that kind of treatmenr. This job is a fish bowl and I don't think they wanted any part of that. Scott puts his family first so he said no thanks.
Hurley was pretty much always using this as leverage for a raise. No surprise there. You still HAVE to talk to the guy and make him say no. We offered $12.5 mil/yr. What else could we do? He was always a long shot.
Billy repeatedly hinted he was interested but has explicitly stated he would not engage any talks until after the Bulls season is over. Agree or disagree....Mitch obviously didn't want to wait that long.
Pope was the next call. For better or for worse. Its a gamble and I get why outsiders are laughing it up. There are a lot of positives in Pope's favor and I do think he can be successful here. The question is the degree to which he can do so. He can coach. His Xs and Os are rock solid. It's the recruiting we've got to see. All we can do is wait and see what happens.
Either it works or it doesn't. Coach Pope is a risky hire just because he's still somewhat unproven. But if this works out it could be absolutely amazing. Davis at UNC and Scheyer at Duke have been successful so far, so no reason to think Pope can't be here. Boosters are back on board now that Cal has gone to Arkansas. Our NIL site crashed....thats how excited folks are to support this new regime.
Mark Pope will be given every chance to succeed here and every resource at Kentucky basketball's disposal is his. I'd caution the naysayers to wait and see how this plays out. He has my support until he gives me a reason not to.

I'll add of the names we heard on the next tier down, I wasn't super enthused. Shaka Smart, Sean Miller, Chris Beard, and Bruce Pearl. Pearl and Beard are the only two I could convince myself to get on board with. Even then, don't think either would be our long term answer. Pope is a total gamble but it could be a big payoff if this works out. If it doesn't, we'll be doing this again in a few years. It is what it is.

That Kentucky wasn’t near the job the fans thought it was. If it was, they wouldn’t have had to beg a former player to take the job.
UK was ready to make Hurley the highest paid coach in the SEC, regardless of sport. UK was ready to pay Hurley $11 million a year, and he turned it down to stay in Connecticut. According to sources with On3, he wouldn’t have took the job for $20 million a year.

I mean...we only seriously engaged two guys. Drew and Hurley.

Anything that KSR/Matt Jones(?) says is just wishcasting/throwing shite against a wall.
He's the UK version of Phillip Marshall for the Barn.

1. The coaching search reaffirmed that Kentucky basketball fans are the most irrational in college sports. No coach will ever live up to their expectations.
2. It confirmed that Kentucky is not the top job in college basketball, not even close. Kentucky may be the top program of all time. But because of delusional fans with unrealistic expectations and a lackluster AD, any coach is destined to fail. No matter what they achieve they will be fired or run out of town. What top coach would want to subject himself to that? The answer is none of them. Calipari is probably the biggest egomaniac in the game, and even he couldn’t handle it..
3. It is doubtful Kentucky will ever have another coach that fans are happy with.
4. Kentucky basketball is not what Kentucky fans think it is, and it will never be.
5. I learned to dislike WildcatMike more than I did before, and I learned to dislike several other Kentucky fans that I had never paid much attention to before.
6. Kentucky fans are thin skinned and can not handle being told the hard truth.
7. No matter how much success Pope has, there will be a segment of the Kentucky fanbase that will soon be calling for his head and demanding a new coach.
8. Kentucky fans will conveniently forget how this search went and will convince themselves they can get any coach they want. They will fire up the “Fire Pope!” movement. And it will be wash, rinse, repeat.
9. Kentucky fans are their own worst enemy.
10. The rant may say that Nate Oats is a murderer and dogshite coach. But they wish he were their coach.

Fans are the same at literally every major program.

“Run out of town” means leaving entirely of your own accord as the second highest paid coach in the nation days after having told the fanbase you were coming back. All off the heels of half a decade of mediocrity. He was always vocal about expectations here and wasn’t at all surprised.
3. It is doubtful Kentucky will ever have another coach that fans are happy with.
Pure speculation. The fanbase has shown a pretty consistent expectation of postseason success from Tubby to Cal. No one tired of Pitino because he didn’t decline.
4. Kentucky basketball is not what Kentucky fans think it is, and it will never be.
No idea what this means. If not the greatest program of all-time, it’s obviously in the discussion.
5. I learned to dislike WildcatMike more than I did before, and I learned to dislike several other Kentucky fans that I had never paid much attention to before.
No one gives two shits.
6. Kentucky fans are thin skinned and can not handle being told the hard truth.
You haven’t come within spitting distance of the truth.
7. No matter how much success Pope has, there will be a segment of the Kentucky fanbase that will soon be calling for his head and demanding a new coach.
No matter the level of success? Lol

Your crystal ball carries as much worth as your diatribe.
9. Kentucky fans are their own worst enemy.
Whatever.
10. The rant may say that Nate Oats is a murderer and dogshite coach. But they wish he were their coach.[/quote]
There are many fans who would like to have had him but it’s hardly the majority of the fanbase. As far as the Rant, I have no clue.

I learned that UK made a lateral move, saved 3.5 million a year and removed a buyout.
I also learned that Arkansus thinks they got a massive upgrade when they actually got a giant turd

The original poster of this thread makes no sense. A schools historic status has absolutely nothing to do in any way with this coaching search. Furthermore, it isn’t diminished by NIL. You can hate Kentucky for whatever reason, but our name is on the lips of a HIGH MAJORITY of recruits despite the last 5-years of Cal’s failure.
It was refreshing to see men have some loyalty and not chase a check. They have families too and believe it or not, some of them are happy where they are and like the relationships and opportunities they have been afforded.
Kids on the other hand. They and their handlers/families are going to chase paydays as soon as they are available- regardless of the school.
Stop drawing horrible correlations between things you have zero knowledge of. You’re either real young and dumb, or just slow mentally on your take.

Simple....every school view themselves much higher than true value no matter which sport.
The list of potential coaches the AD's keep in his desk needs to revised more often it appears.
Louisville believed their stock value was higher. Humble today.
