Pretty sure that “wager” isn’t even against the rules. Better safe than sorry, I guess.

Yeah, I never understood the rules against a wager like that, though I suppose the rules are just blanket rules against gambling in general.

It's not like they were betting that they would LOSE ROTY - that could easily be seen as being willing to tank it near end season (but $10k is nothing to them now, so even then that seems unlikely).

I've heard it explained when Pete Rose said he never bet against his team (whether you believe it or not). Say the Reds were up 5 in the bottom of the 9th and the line was 4 with 10k on the line. Pete would be much more likely to put in his top reliever on one day of rest to make sure they cover when most managers would put someone else in. Sure it isn't close to as bad but a bet like that is still might affect how you manage or play a game. Rose might not have lost games on purpose but he might have screwed up his pitching schedule for a few days and lost a subsequent game to win a bet.

For football player, especially a QB with a side bet with his team way ahead in the 4th. He might be more likely to switch a play from a run to a pass that he thinks will get him another TD and some more yards for his stats. Yeah it is like sneaking into a concert compared to robbing a bank but none of these leagues want people out there saying a result was tainted.

I wonder if Pete Rose was just so bored that he used the betting (on himself, his team, etc) to make the game more alive.

Sometimes, it can be hard to watch (NFL comes to mind but during fall/winter -- not much else to do on Sundays) if you don't have some money riding on it.

if the NFL was so worried about gambling why is their a team in Vegas and why do they let ESPN Bet Fan Duel and Draft Kings advertise on all their games
