The account used by someone with a previously-established account. It's so people can pretend to be someone they aren't and get different reactions to their messages, etc.

A lot of alters are made only after they lose their one account. Thankfully, it’s very easy to spot some.

The word you are looking for is “altar.” To alter is to change something. An altar is, among other things … what you said.
