Sitting here in late April and still stewing.
Which was worse?
Tyler Simmons offsides or 1 to 6 with one loss in a conference championship?
23 Georgia was dominant despite being very banged up.
Kirby should have 4 titles and a 3 peat.
Willing to die on this hill.
Debate it.

Might not be a popular opinion but 2017 was a better team overall.

The Tyler Simmons call wasn’t the only one. There were several that weren’t called on Alabama that night. Even with all of that, it came down to one coverage breakdown that was the difference.

2017 hurt more because of "1980".

On the other hand, three in a row would have been a huge deal.

2017 hurt way more. A 3 peat would have been amazing but I’ll always remember the first two.

2017 hurt for years afterwards.

The Najee Harris Canadian Football League head start/Tua throws a touchdown pass to a receiver he wasn't he even looking at on 4th down in last few minutes when we're up 7 was the the bullshittiest play of all imo.

Outside of Dawg fans, nobody wanted to see a Georgia 3peat. The media started setting it up immediately after last year's championship game. "Look at Georgia's weak schedule in 2023! It's embarassing, it's absurd, it's not fair." That narrative was repeated hundreds of times across sports media venues, as if they had discovered something never seen before. The implication, and sometimes direct statement, was that one loss should disqualify Georgia from the playoffs.

None of those proclamations was followed up with a comparative analysis of all the other schedules. Nobody ever pondered how an "easy" SEC schedule compared to a normal Big 12, Pac 12, Acc or Big 10 schedule. I guess it went without saying that teams like Oregon, Penn State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Iowa, Kansas St. and Arizona were far better than lowly Missouri, Tennessee and Ole Miss. And of course, Kentucky wouldn't even be competitive against ranked teams like Louisville or Clemson.

During the 2023 UT game in Knoxville, ESPN announcers stated that UGA had't faced a single ranked opponent on the road during their 27 game undefeated streak. That was a very misleading statistic and an attempt to downplay Georgia's run of dominance. In 2022 road games, Georgia demolished both South Carolina (final ranking #23) and Miss. St (final ranking #20). Final rankings are obviously a better metric to retrospectively judge a schedule than gametime rankings. And they didn't mention that during that same span, Georgia had beaten teams with a final ranking of 2, 3, 15, 16, 4, and 2, at neutral sites.

I don’t really have a problem with us dropping from 1 to 6 based on everything around us.

Do I think we were one of the best 4 teams? Yes. Do I think we deserved to be top 4? No. If we wanted to do that, we should have beaten Bama.

And honestly, the 4th down incompletion in that game that wasn’t overturned might have been worse than the Tyler Simmons offsides. They had replay and still didn’t get the call right. On top of that, the Tyler Simmons block came when they missed a Bama false start so instead of a blocked punt it really should have been a 5 yard penalty on Bama.

tyler simmons without a shadow of a doubt. When I walked out of lucas oil stadium I remember thinking we could have a losing record the next 5 years and lose to UF/gt in each of 'em and I woulnd't even care. That feeling of winning a natty for the first time in my life was enough to sustain another decade regardless of what happened. Little did I imagine that we'd win the next 15 and go back to back anyway.

Going 13-1 and winning the orange bowl in the most lopsided bowl game of all time and finishing int eh top 5 was a remarkable season, even if it didn't end with a national title.

2017 hurt really bad because it was the first natty we'd even played for in my lifetime, and it felt like the universe just conspired against us with all the absolute horse shite calls that went against us. Not to mention the obvious way in which it ended.
