But this is just an idiot trainer grasping at straws to save his own job.
and a trainer can certainly help, but he can't manufacture basketball skills.

Perhaps he can fine-tune a few things, and improve conditioning, but it's 98% HVL's innate talent that makes the difference. That and practicing basic basketball guard skills in the off-season, with or without a trainer.

It ain't rocket science.

In many team situations, it is often the case when someone has to step up and assume another's position. There are some limitations, but a certain amount of transfer and innovation is sometimes involved. We have pilots who learned on one aircraft move to another--or perhaps some members of rock bands will assume roles when needed. When a person moves into a new role, they should adapt and learn as much as they can so as to do the job more effectively. A trainer or coach can encourage you, but ultimately you have to discipline yourself to improve to the point where it's your best--though you might not be as good as the one you replace--or perhaps you find you are better or more flexible than the one you replaced. It could also be that HVL felt like she had been placed in a rut and couldn't find her way out (or perhaps didn't want to). It is not the trainer or coach, but the will of the individual.
