How about being trusted by your parents to ride your bicycle ALL day Saturday w/o supervision (and obviously w/o being tracked by a cell phone) even though you were only 16 years old?? The conversation would go something this: "Hey mom, _______ (insert the name of your best friend) and I are going to ride our bicycles and go out to Smith River (10 miles away). We'll be back in time for supper, ok?"

16? I was doing that at 7. By 12 I was taking the bus an hour away into the city (SF) to hang out. 16? I had a car. I might be 300 miles away on a Saturday.

We had a renter in a house I grew in 70/80s. I had to go over the other day because she passed. There is still a “V” shape exciting the front yard that is where I would ride my bike down onto the street.
