I was once told that Magnolia is a giant shrub.
Letting it grow to the ground, "mounding" hides what is an awful mess behind a thick green wall.
If you don't have the room for that, be prepared for a mix of mess and work, follow very soon thereafter by more mess, in perpetuity.
But they are beautiful. And worth it, in my opinion

^^^This. Don't force the tree to be what it is not, and you won't have nearly as much mess. Yes, they do shed, but most falls within the drip line. Do not remove the lower branches, or select the right tree for the space.
