Apparently he has been falling behind Brockmeyer in the center battle and plans to transfer.

Depth aside, I feel like it's a positive if true. Means James has grinded it out and outplayed someone who had a lot in his favor going into the competition.

Not bad for a guy many thought was a throw in with his 5* brother Tommy.

After only a week of practice?

I'd think it would be hard to transfer into a completely new offense after spring and be the starter somewhere else.

There could be many reasons he's considering a transfer. It can't be understated the culture shock going from the NW to the deep south.

I hope the young man hangs around and makes the most of his opportunity but I'm by him like I was all the ship jumpers after CNS retired. You don't want to be here and wear the colors carry your goat smelling arse up the road.

Update: Freshman RB Daniel Hill is an absolute problem in spring practice. I’m being told he came in a grown man and is an absolute nightmare in goal line situations. Expect to see this talented ball carrier sooner rather than later.

Hope this is true. Officiated a game of his. Very physical but I thought he prolly wouldn’t see action early … guess I don’t know shite!

He’s from Mesa, Arizona. I don’t think going to a college town is that much of a culture shock, it’s not like he’s in Gadsden

He knows the offense and the calls. I doubt he fell behind, he probably didn’t scrimmage due to injury or something since second stringers would get snaps regardless. I don’t doubt something like that could happen but with only a week I’m finding it super odd of a report

Wonder if it's football related. I know a DT from Ole Miss that played in the league a bit and he was having to do dialysis twice a week, if I remember correctly, from a RB giving him a helmet to his kidney.

Mesa is smack dab in the middle of the Phoenix sprawl.

I'm not saying it has anything to do with culture shock at all, but don't rule it out based on that. Phoenix and Seattle are worlds away from a small town like Tuscaloosa.

I don't buy this small town big town argument. At one time this might have been significant but I've driven all over this country and TODAY there isn't a lot of difference between one area vs another as long as the city has a significant retail development, which Tuscaloosa certainly does have that. Giant corporations have erased the individual regional differences so the restaurants and stores in Ttown are the same ones or similar to what you'll see coast to coast.

The big difference in Tuscaloosa is that it's the red hot center of the college football universe. Everybody wants to destroy them and so the players who come here have to work harder and longer than anyone else. Some players when faced with the sort of commitment required realize they don't want to be that good. They just want to rest at where their natural talent can take them. I'm not saying that is the case with him but it's going to be the case with some freshmen and transfers every year. This has not changed because Saban retired.

One thing some of you young folks will realize is that Saban was the best ever to do it, but many things about Alabama under Saban were because of Alabama and not necessarily Saban. When Mike Shula was coach we were not a strong program, but everyone still played against Alabama like it was their superbowl and no coach EVER got fired in a year that he beat Alabama. Not unless he shagged the teenaged baby sitter.

I'm not sure it's actually a "situation." Brailsford apparently didn't scrimmage last week, but to my knowledge no reason was ever given. For all I know he had the flu or something temporary.

I think it's ridiculous to believe he's "falling behind" someone else after only a week of practice -- especially when he was the center for what was considered to be the best offensive line in college football last year.

Even if he was slated behind Brockermeyer at the beginning of spring practice, it's likely that was a move by the coaching staff to combat attrition. As a coach, you don't want to appear to play favorites when players transfer in from your old school.

My standard caveats apply: I have no inside knowledge, and I'm just speculating. But Occam's Razor would suggest it's more likely that Brailsford is being asked to prove himself to the team (and his new offensive line coach), rather than just being anointed as the starter.

And any talk of him being unhappy due to cultural issues or such is (as far as I know) purely guesswork.

Definitely. As I said, I have absolutely no information on any of this.

Along those same lines, I haven't seen anything concrete from anybody else, either. The one solid piece of information (I think) is that Brailsford didn't scrimmage last week. From that, various folks have extrapolated that he's falling behind, he's not happy, and he's experiencing cultural issues by transferring from Washington to Alabama.

All of that could be true ... I don't know. But that seems like quite a series of leaps to me, when it could just be that he was sick for the scrimmage or something similarly minor.
