Alabama Advances to Second Round of NCAA Tournament with 4-1 Win over Charlotte

The Crimson Tide used four singles wins to down the Niners in the opening round match

DURHAM, N.C. –– Highlighted by four-straight wins in singles action, the No. 20 Alabama men's tennis team (18-12) topped Charlotte (19-8), 4-1, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament to secure the Tide a spot in the tournament's second round.

After dropping the doubles point, UA rallied to claim four straight wins in singles play to clinch the overall team victory. Roan Jones tallied the first point in singles action on court five, followed by a straight-set victory on court one from Filip Planinsek. Matias Ponce De Leon moved the Tide to match point with a win on court two, before Zach Foster captured an exciting three-set, come-from-behind victory on court six.

Alabama will advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the 10th time in program history and will face No. 13 Duke Saturday at noon CT at Ambler Tennis Stadium.

From Head Coach George Husack
"Good test of patience, focus and response today. Charlotte battled and threw some good punches. Our guys took some body blows but kept their feet under them. They accepted the challenge and never stepped out of the ring. While for some it might be nerve racking, for us it defines who we are, and our guys are tough. I'm confident in their ability and resilience. We will recover and be ready to lace up the gloves again tomorrow."
