What is Muss thinking after that spectacle tonight?

I don't mean this a a flame thread towards him. I appreciate what he did here, but at the same time, I don't feel like he appreciated the resources he had.

I feel like his ego got in the way, but tonight he probably saw what could have been his. Now he'll coach in front of 5k fans, and have Jim Rome as his mouthpiece.

I think he slowly fades out from here, but I could be wrong.

Not even 5K several times in PAC play last year. He went for location, and we upgraded.

I think so too. We sucked every year in conference, got a mediocre seed, then tourney Devo came out several years in a row when we were beat.

Was it Muss coaching, or Devo being a cornered tiger? Every run we had exceeded our regular season expectations, and everyone happened because Devo went nuts.

Maybe, I'm being too critical of Muss, but you'll never convince me he coached Devo to go Michael Jordan every time we needed it.

Based on regular season results vs. Tourney results it's questionable if it was coaching, or Devo not wanting to go home.

I’m forever grateful for the attitude and energy that Muss brought back to the program and I’m also grateful that he left once he knew that the ride was over.

I have no idea what makes the man tick though. People say he wants to go home but I don’t buy that long term. The guy has lived out of a suitcase since he was a kid. I think he runs too hot and cold to ever get too comfortable. He burns himself out and has to move on.

I’m not sure how he’s going to handle the high school sized crowds and casual environment. Bet he’ll miss BWA more than anything. He seemed the most in his zone when he was working 20k fans into a frenzy. That simply doesn’t exist in LA.

This. I'd rather a coach leave a little early than overstay. That turns into something ugly and adversarial between the coach and the fans.

There’s a poster named northbruin claiming he would shed some light on why Muss left.

Very few posts over several years, most of them about Muss

Muss was the best thing to happen to Arkansas basketball since I was a kid. He proved that we can still be a powerhouse and recruit top talent to Fayetteville. Hopefully, one day, we will find out what led to his departure.

Now we have a Hall of Fame coaching legend leading the way. As Nolan once said, "We created a monster, and you've got to feed it."

I'm just hopeful Cal can deliver us another trophy.

Arkansas was his first real college basketball job that brought real pressure.

This isn't Nevada and had no excuse of not making the tournament this year. It certainly didn't help that he went 8-10 in the SEC the season before and didn't make the final four with the highest recruiting class ever.

I don't believe that was the whole problem but his relationships with boosters did him in. So to me he ran off to California with his tail between his legs.

Another poster on the rant said that Muss and his wife treated people poorly and made a scene at some event.

I asked was he like Petrino?

He said he was worse because Petrino knew where he was in the pecking order.

It doesn't help that he slowly started losing control of his teams and his emotions on the court. I can see why boosters were tired of it, we had a lot of success under Eric and I am forever grateful, but he had a lot more negative towards the end of his tenure. I hope he does well at USC and brings their program to new heights just like I hope Cal coming here continues to build what we have and further cement that respect that we should have on a national stage.

Muss is only kept from being a great coach by his inability to control his emotions. Cal is a cool customer and seldom gets rattled without purpose.

Muss shows a lot of petulant immaturity and always has. Shirt off, sleeping in the pool house because he’s so worked up, assistants holding him back from refs…all embarrassing examples of that emotional immaturity.

His passion alone was good for the program, but it was time to move on.

Yeah and he was goofy around campus selling tickets and doing social media like Chad did. It was interesting to hear Cal say that last night during the introduction asking if he had to sell tickets. He knows fans better show up because he’s bringing basketball. It made me think immediately of Muss being goofy and an insult from cal towards him.

It does seem like Sam is sour from this thing too so I expect drama to pickup even further in football, unfortunately. Sam needs a reality check and realize he needs to go as well, he seems like he’s going to be a PITA to get rid of for someone we hooked up.

One thing that really stuck out to me over the last 2 seasons was Muss' engagement levels. Remember how we'd see all the creative stuff he'd do in the locker room to remind the team what the goal was and what they had been working on? You didn't see much if any of that the last couple of years. I think Muss is one of those guys whose schtick works for a few years, then he needs to move on before the act gets old. We were at that point.

It might have happened at some specific event, but they were absolutely awesome members of the NWA community (to the point that my wife who doesn't follow hog sports was like: dang, I hate that they're leaving. They were great in Fayetteville.") They were present in the community frequently, treated people (wait staff) well, and were very nice to fans and such. I know a few different coach families, and they all seemed to really like Muss and Danielle. But they could have certainly pissed off someone at some point, I'm sure.

Maybe there is some behind the scenes stuff but I imagine that he really did want to be out west also. He was always visiting out there during the offseason and his mom lives close- she never even came to a game here. Imagine he doesn’t have too many years left to see her.

Don't know why we can't just leave it at that and move on. I'm thankful for what Muss did to elevate our program back to relevance. It's been said since the day he was hired how much of a west coast guy he is. There doesn't have to be anything more to it than that. No doubt there were other factors at play. But there's no reason to get hung up on it. Be thankful and move on.

I'm with you brother. Muss brought the first real excitement back to our program since Pelphrey. Prl had emotion and was exciting. It looked like it was going to erupt, but then it fizzled.

Muss delivered results in postseason play and put us back on the radar. He didn't trash our state or our program when he left. None of us know why he left, but the simplest answer is usually the most accurate answer so he probably was looking to get back toward thw West Coast.

I hope he dominates the B1G and I hope Cal wins a natty here.

I’m glad Cal mentioned Muss. He made us matter nationally again. No way Cal comes here if we were still stuck in the mud like we were pre-Muss.

I appreciate his contributions and hope he’s happy back home. His mom can come watch more games now which is important to him I imagine. I think she only made it to 1 or 2 games while he was here.
