Their roster makes no sense. UAT is just getting top portal guys who don’t really fit the coach’s style. Cliff doesn’t fit their style at all. Also, there’s no way all of these guys are going to play. Your coach literally plays maybe 7 guys a game. NIL is doing great to buy players but it doesn’t mean that getting the top guys are automatically going to gel, especially if they are not a good fit.

LOL what? A better version of Charles Bediako doesn't fit our style?

We had 10 guys play 20%+ of minutes 2 years ago when we had a diverse roster with 10 guys capable. And it would have been 11 if Welch hadn't been hurt all year.

Oats is outperforming Pearl in every aspect. I'd be worried too if I wasn't a Bama basketball fan.

No, have you seen him play? Or watch actual basketball? He’s great at defense, I agree, that work for any team. But he is not run and gun type of player and his offense is very limited that your coach needs. Again, just because he’s a good portal player doesn’t mean he fits. Successful college teams are more about fit than talent. It’s why there so many upsets over the more talented teams. I can get the top 5 players in the portal, but if they don’t fit my system, it’s not going to work. Also, how is your coach going to split all of these minutes? You are naive if you think there won’t be resentment when many of these guys are only getting 5 minutes a game. Again, your coach only plays at most 7 players a game.

Oh good, the rebuttal is questioning whether we watch basketball.

Yea, watched him play. Watched his highlights. Read what people say about him. I've never seen anyone think he doesn't fit like a glove with our program and style of play.

He's gonna set high ball screens and roll to the rim. He's gonna play 20-25 minutes a night, more when we play a team with an elite big, and Sherrell is going to play the other 15. And he's going to absolutely shut down anything at the rim, which is what our elite defensive teams under Oats have all had.

The idea that Nate Oats of all people is signing transfers based on 247 rankings or something is hysterical. All of our premium big targets for 5 years have fit the exact same mold - long, athletic, defend the rim without fouling. Our backup option was a more raw version of Cliff, Onyenso from Kentucky, whose advanced metrics are almost identical. Our incoming freshman center, Sherrell, is of almost identical build and athleticism as Chuck, Cliff and Onyenso. This is the type of player we want at center every season.

Tipton also made it clear we got him even though we were outbid in NIL pretty significantly (likely by North Carolina).

So no, I pretty vehemently disagree with the idea that we snagged him because he's "ranked high" and we "threw NIL" around. He was the best and most veteran version of our ideal center available, and we get to pair him with a 18 year old who is similar in body type but young.

That’s just not correct at all. Auburn literally has no NIL investment and it’s why Pearl goes after diamonds in the rough for the most part. Broome coming back literally took most of our NIL money in basketball. It’s easy to get top players when you have unlimited NIL like you and other schools do. I mean, Arkansas and UK are getting great portal players, and it has nothing to do with their coaches.

I guarantee you I know way more basketball than you do. I’m not arguing he’s not a great defensive guy. His skill set doesn’t match with the style of play when it comes to offense.

I'm pretty confident in my basketball knowledge and, more importantly, our staffs. They've earned the benefit of the doubt in knowing what fits their system, and then winning with that system.

Back that up with data.

Oh, you can't because it's not true.

Now, do we run the risk of players not getting the minutes they want? Sure. More so than any other team? Maybe with this roster. But we also play faster than anybody. So the stats will be inflated based on number of possessions. And stats matter more than minutes imo.

But I trust Oats 100%.

Wow! One of the worst basketball takes I've ever seen on this forum, and that is saying something.

He's in the top 90% of bigs in rim roll PPP. Are you under the impression we expect our 7 foot bigs to shoot 3s? That's the most premium of all premiums if we can tack that on, but those players are far and few between.

He's elite at the rim, good in the PNR game and a very good offensive rebounder. He's offensively exactly what Chuck was his last year here, and better on defense.

Let me ask this then - describe the type of center that "fits our style"?
