A&M was established 6 miles outside of Bryan, Texas. There was a train station stop at the university that was called College Station. As the town grew around the university, they adopted the name College Station.
This.
Originally there was just a lonely campus out there. It is hard to believe that pre WWII there were only 2K in the town of college station.
Clemson has a similar history where the school was there first and the town existed later.
