A big consideration is which island or if you want to go to more than one island, how to get there. Travel between islands is not a simple thing for the most part.
They have posters here that know way more than I do and can give you much more specific advice.

definitely research the islands and find what interests both of you
been to both Maui and Oahu, like the others indicated if you are planning on more then one island then plan it where you arrive at one island and spend a few days and then move to the other island, day trips are harder to do
Maui is laid back and you can kick back and relax beach side at the hotel you are staying at with pool and beach access
Oahu is the bustling city life but still lots of things to see and do away from the busy city life of Honolulu
Kona has the beach/pool type atmosphere
Kuaia is probably the most picturesque one and for the more adventure types with hiking trips

We stayed on Oahu last summer for 6 days then 6 days on The Big Island. The island hopper was the easiest flight of the trip.
And to the OP, if you visit The Big Island, night snorkel with the Manta Ray's, amazing experience.
