I was a classmate of his at Bradley Central High School, Cleveland, Tennessee (class of 62). He was a remarkable athlete, not just in football. He was an All State basketball player and a scratch golfer. RIP, Steve. Nobody who knew you ever had a bad thing to say about you.

I brought up Steve and his popularity at Texas Tech. Since you posted this I wanted to mention that another of your former classmates Rex Dockery is who took over for Sloan at Tech. Sloan and Dockery recruited and coached one of my good friends from my high school there at Tech which is why I paid attention to Tech football in those years.

I remember Rex. Also another good guy. He was a year ahead of Steve's class. He played at U.T. (the original one). I think Steve would have also gone to the Vols, but for Bowden Wyatt and his devotion to the single wing. That caused the Vols to miss out on another good Tennessee Q.B. that year from Kingsport. You may have heard of him also. His name was Steve Spurrier. Those misses cost Wyatt his job.
