Coaching

Head Coach: Mr. Butch Thompson

quote:

Butch Thompson was named Auburn's head baseball coach on October 22, 2015 and recently completed his seventh season with the Tigers in 2022.

Thompson has had 36 players drafted in his Auburn tenure, including 16 in the top 10 rounds and 12 in the top five rounds, both registering as the highest totals in a seven-year span in program history. The 2022 MLB Draft saw eight Auburn players drafted, marking the second-highest total in program history and the most in the top 20 rounds. The eight draft picks were the third most in the SEC and tied for the fifth most in the country. Additionally, the four picks in the top five rounds were the most in program history and tied for the second most in the country. The Tigers have now had at least one player drafted in the top five rounds for a record seven straight seasons.

In 30 years of coaching at the collegiate level, including 21 in the Southeastern Conference, Thompson has coached nine College World Series participants, including leading the Tigers to the program's first trip to the College World Series in 22 years in 2019 and taking the team back for the second time in three postseasons in 2022. Auburn is one of six programs to appear in two of the last three College World Series, and Thompson is one of five active SEC coaches who have taken their program to a pair of College World Series in a three-year span. Thompson has also coached one national champion and a national runner-up, won nine conference championships and made 18 postseason appearances. He has also served as an assistant under three National Coach of the Year recipients.

Nonemaker spent the previous six seasons as an assistant and recruiting coordinator at Old Dominion University. He was on Auburn's staff from 2005-07, helping the program to a NCAA Regional final in 2005.

During his time on the Plains, Nonemaker has assembled four top-15 recruiting classing, including the No. 8 early signing class for 2022. Each of the Tigers' next two classes for 2023 and 2024 are also currently considered top-10 classes by Perfect Game.

Mr. Gabe Gross

quote:

Former Auburn All-American Gabe Gross re-joined the Tigers' coaching staff as an assistant coach prior to the 2018 season and recently completed his fifth season back on The Plains.

A three-year starter in the Auburn outfield from 1999-01, Gross was a first-team All-American in 2000 after he led the Southeastern Conference in hitting with a blistering .430 average. A two-time All-SEC performer, Gross was a freshman All-American in 1999 and a second-team Academic All-American in 2001.

In Gross' five seasons as the hitting coach, the Tigers have turned in a .281 combined batting average with 513 doubles and 297 home runs in 267 games. Gross and the offense have played an instrumental role in lead the team to Omaha in two of the last three seasons and to the Super Regionals in three of the last four.

Hitting Coach:

Mr. Daron Schoenrock
