You can quote my words all you want but the position is the weak link right now. We can pray for his development for sure but he relied on raw athleticism last year.

You'll figure it out later.

I’ll say this: Chaney Johnson is better than Daniel Purifoy
Posted on 5/18/24 at 7:30 pm to auburnnyc94
lol probably smarter than Purifoy. And you also forget Purifoy was more of a bust being Bruce's first pro like guy.
Purifoy knocked down 59 threes as a freshman and knocked down 87% of his FTs then.
His PER never got as low as Chaney's either.
And for those that think Chaney wasnt a liability he averaged 6.4 PF per 40.

I think he has Okeke potential. His offensive bag is nice. If he can defend/rebound consistently like Chuma watch out…

Umm love Chaney but no.
With that I support all that wear the orange and blue. Not sure why some find it so hard to do.

Some good info from Bruce today. Sounds like we are going to take the best available guard regardless of position and we are in on a couple. If we land a 2/3 type guy Tahaad will probably get backup 1 minutes in addition to his off ball minutes. If we land a 1/2 type they will get the backup minutes at the 1 and all of Tahaad minutes will come at the 2.
And reading between the lines a bit, it does seem like Johni will get some real run at the 4.

"I think that's the last piece — one more impactful guard," Pearl said Monday before his annual Fore the Children golf fundraiser. "... We really need one more guy that has a chance to compete. It really doesn't matter for me which position it's going to be, whether it's a 1/2 or a 2/1, a 2/3, a 3/2 — it doesn't really matter. But it'll be one more guard. We've tried to be really patient to get the right fit. We're involved with a couple of really good ones. I can't believe we're in the middle of May, and we're not done recruiting. But that's what the combination of NIL and the transfer portal has done."
"The reason why Tahaad's not a point guard right now is because he's such a good scorer and a good shooter," Pearl said. I just don't think putting the responsibility of making him — not only make the adjustment of high school to college — but make the adjustment to having the ball in his hands full time. So that's something that would not be as good for him. At the same time, I definitely see him coming in and competing for minutes at the 1, if I wind up taking a guy that's a 2 or a 3. If we take a 2, then he'll be right where he is. But if we do take a wing, then I think he'll, by virtue of his size, be put in a position where he'll play both positions."

Interesting read (kudos to Bruce and staff) on who gets the most out of their transfers.

JLee quietly put in a pick for Miles Kelley to AU. Hoke also hinting there could be momentum there. Basically implied missing on our main PF targets could allow us to go big for a G/W.

Miles would be a fantastic signing, believe he ran the point some for GaTech.

Good player. Would be a threat to get as many minutes as Denver overall. Big loser would be Pettiford but I'll take the riches

From the way Hoke is talking, sounds like Kelly could push CBM for the starting spot. If we get a guy like Kelly then I think we end up basically using our 2s and 3s interchangeably with Denver getting 10 mins a game as the second PG.

Interesting. Thanks for the info

I don't put a lot of stock in Lee or Hoke when it comes to basketball recruiting but I do hope they are right

I agree on Lee. I’m pretty sure Hoke is close to someone on the staff though.
Regardless, hopefully they’re right on this one.

Hoke is really close to the biggest booster for basketball. Or at least he was during my time at Auburn. And over time I think it kinda morphed into him being close with Steven Pearl.
He doesn’t know the game super well though so kinda gotta read around some of the things he says
