#17 LSU - I can only presume that loss to FSU is an albatross around LSU's neck - not like this ranking matters worth a damn anyway, but there you go.

that and getting annihilated at home vs UT.

ETA: Google is still king. SP+ has LSU ranked behind OSU in 2019.

If your ranking system sees anyone other than LSU as the best team in 2019 then you need to tweak your system /thread

It's right. Who would be favored over Bama except Georgia and maybe Ohio St?

And I DO NOT want Bama in the playoffs even if a field of 12.

We don’t deserve to be in the playoffs. We’re in consolation bowl mode and of course beat Auburn and hope for a top 5 finish. That’s what we’re playing for.

For 2019, they concluded that LSU was the second best team behind OSU. That’s all I need to know.

Can you imagine if lsu had played that osu team? Might have scored 50+. And them having a mobile quarterback would have been their doom. Fields would have been on the ground the whole time.

I wish we had played 16 games that year just so no one could say anything. Like after the natty, just go play the Burrow bowl against OSU so there would have been no room for idiocy.

I was not trying to make that assertion, and I don't think ESPN was either.

SP+ are really just good for something to talk about.

I think that was FPI, right?

Yeah, and I think they were actually #3

It happens every year; you just learn to deal with it.

In 1992 Alabama trounced an undefeated Miami team 34-13 (giving up only 6 points on defense) in route to an undefeated season and national championship.

Of course, some folks were saying that Florida State would have beaten Alabama in that game (mostly based on one game where Florida State beat Florida more soundly than Alabama did in the SECCG).

Someone will ALWAYS say "Team X that you didn't play could have beaten you!"

Water off a duck's back, my friend.

Yeah, but that would’ve been the team and year to do it. No worries though, it’s

Any poll that has LSU at 17, Texas at 8, and Oklahoma at 18 can be immediately dismissed.

It's the kind of result that should call into question the entire algorithm.

2019 FPI was weird

LSU was #3, behind OSU and Clemson, with Alabama at #4

The efficiencies, OTOH, had LSU #2 - LINK

OSU's defense was ranked much more efficient than LSU's while their offense was just a bit below LSU's. That being said Ohio State's defense digressed near the end of the year just as LSU's was getting better. OSU had 7 straight games of giving up 10 points or less; 4 of their last 5 they gave up 21 or more.

That SP+ ranking never makes sense.

These aren't based on resumes, they're not really rankings. They're predictors. Despite Bama's 2 losses, both of them were on the last play of the game. Neutral field they'd still predict Bama to win against anyone other than UGA, OSU, and UM. Or rather Bama should be favored over anyone other than those 3, and yes that includes if they had a rematch with LSU or Tennessee.

Josh Pate had a good suggestion about how these power ratings shouldn't decide the actual playoff rankings but it should factor into strength of schedule.

Absolutely. They should not decide the playoffs - but they should be included to determine things like Strength of Record, which is a great metric that basically just weighs your wins and losses vs who you played.

This just says "how good you are on a per play basis". And that is fine, but we don't judge teams on how good they are in an average play. We judge them on winning games and who they win those games against.

#8 Texas - I don't have words. Seriously.
We don't either.

Either this is the most talented team ever wasted by a coach, or no team has ever gotten this much benefit of the doubt from losing by 1 to mighty Alabama.

This Texas team is, at best, fringe top 20

All I can say is garbage in, garbage out. Alabama had some close losses to good teams sure, but they also had some sketchy wins.

Oklahoma at #18 being 5-5 is damning for sure.

It's not a 'ranking'. It's basically a tool to predict vegas lines, and it's really, really good at it. As a few have noted here, Bama would be favored on a neutral site right now against all but a handful of teams. He explains all of this in the top of the article every week. Bill Connelly has forgotten more about evaluating college football teams than anyone on this board will ever know.
